Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry offers BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, BSc (Hons) in Analytical and Testing Sciences, MSc in Analytical Chemistry, MPhil (by research), and PhD degrees. It presently has approximately 223 undergraduate students, 61 taught postgraduate students and 50 research students and project staff.
The Department places a strong emphasis on both quality education and scholarly research/services, and has reached a significant milestone where its educational programmes are not only innovative but also accessible, and its major areas of research strength are well recognised and supported.
1. Professor and Head of Department (PR005/16-17)
The candidates should have the qualities and track records as an academic leader in teaching and research. The successful candidate will be appointed as Professor, and hold a concurrent headship appointment.
Reporting to the Dean of Faculty of Science, the Head is a senior academic staff who is responsible for envisioning and steering the direction of the Department’s long-term development, including the development of its teaching, research, and faculty profiles, and shall plan and develop various resources and opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to work towards such a direction. The Head is also responsible for establishing and maintaining the smooth operations of the Department, and at the same time engaging in teaching and research.
The candidate should have an earned PhD degree in Chemistry or a related field, and has extensive experience in actively engaging in as well as leading academic teaching and sponsored research programmes. He/She is expected to be a renowned scholar in his/her field of research at the regional/international level.
2. Professor / Associate Professor (2 positions) (PR006/16-17)
The Department invites applications for two faculty positions in (i) the area of Analytical Chemistry and (ii) any area of Chemistry with emphasis on organic or pharmaceutical chemistry. The appointees are expected to teach at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and conduct independent programmes of research.
The candidates should have a PhD degree in Chemistry, a proven track record of research and strong commitment to teaching.
All of the above are tenure-track positions with initial appointment to be made on fixed-term contract of three years. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
