The 7th World Chinese Mass Spectrometry Conference
The 7thWorld Chinese Mass Spectrometry Conference (WCMSC) and 15thTaiwan Society for Mass Spectrometry Annual Conference in Taipei, July 18-20, 2018
The 7thWorld Chinese Mass Spectrometry Conference (WCMSC) hosted by Taiwan Society for Mass Spectrometry (TSMS) in Taipei from July 18 to July 20, 2018 was a highly successful event. The Chinese American Society for Mass Spectrometry (CASMS) assembled a 12-member delegation for this year’s WCMSC. The WCMSC is a bi-yearly event co-organized by CASMS, Chinese Society for Mass Spectrometry (CSMS), Hong Kong Mass Spectrometry Society (HKMSS) and TSMS. This year, Prof. Qingfeng Lin from Singapore National University also represented Singapore Mass Spectrometry Society for the meeting.
The event started with a prelude by organizing a half-day WCMSC satellite symposium at the I-Lan University College of Engineering on July 17. The program featured both junior and senior professors from each society on their research and society activities. Prof. Zhibo Yang from University of Oklahoma, a member in the CASMS Annual Meeting and Programs Committee, represented CASMS and presented recent research achievements from his group. Prof. Lingjun Li from University of Wisconsin-Madison, former CASMS president, as a senior professor from CASMS, used many historical pictures to reflect previous WCMSC meetings and active participation of CASMS members in those meetings. The Symposium also had a roundtable discussions co-hosted by CASMS President-elect Liang Li and former TSMS President Moo-Rong Lee on the topics of collaboration opportunities and technology development with the lead speakers including Dr. W. Andy Tao of the CASMS President, Dr. Yu-Ju Chen of Director of Institute of Chemistry, Academia Sinica, and Dr. Mengxia Xie from Beijing Normal University.
The main program started on July 18 in Nangang, Taipei where Academia Sinica is located. Prof. Hongyuan Chen from Nanjing University, Prof. Evan Williams from University of California-Berkeley and Prof. Oliver Fiehn from University of California-Davis were the plenary speakers. During the two and a half day main program, four scientific sessions were held in parallel. All 12 CASMS delegates were keynote speakers and/or chairs for these sessions that covered multiple subjects on fundamentals, instrumentation, proteomics, metabolomics, biomedical applications, drug discovery, environmental and toxicology, and food safety.
The conference also featured a WCMSC tradition, gift exchanges among MS societies, during the Conference banquet on July 19. Prof. W. Andy Tao, President of CASMS, presented CASMS gifts, customer-designed crystal craved with the CASMS logo, to Prof. Hongyuan Chen, CSMS President, Prof. Pao-Chi Liao, TSMS President, and Prof. Zhongping Yao, HKMSS President.
