Dr. Lan Huang is a professor of physiology and biophysics at the University of California-Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine. She received her B.S. in Chemistry in 1986 from Nanjing University, China, and Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry in 1995 from the University of Florida with Professor Robert T. Kennedy. After the postdoctoral training in biological mass spectrometry (MS) with Professor Al Burlingame at UC San Francisco, she stayed at UC San Francisco for a couple of years as a research specialist.  She joined the faculty at UCI in 2003. Dr. Huang is nominated for the ASMS Secretary for two year term.
Her research is focused on developing novel, integrated MS-based proteomic strategies to fully characterize the dynamic proteome of macromolecular protein complexes and understand how they function. In particular, she is interested in studying protein complexes (e.g. proteasomes) in the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Her group has developed several methods to study protein-protein interactions of protein complexes including the QTAX strategy (quantitative analysis of tandem affinity purified in vivo cross-linked (x) protein complexes), for deciphering in vivo protein interactomes and new sample preparation strategies to define dynamic interactions. Her group has also developed new cross-linking strategies to facilitate MS detection and identification of the cross-linked peptides to elucidate their protein structures. These strategies have been successfully applied to delineate proteasomal biology.  Dr. Huang has co-authored over 70 peer-reviewed papers, and served as guest co-editor for special issues of Molecular & Cellular Proteomics on Protein Degradation & Ubiquitin Pathways (2011, 2012). Since 2007, she has been an editorial board member of Molecular & Cellular Proteomics. She has served on multiple NIH, NSF and other funding agencies’ review panels.
Dr. Huang has been a member of ASMS since 1996 and is also a member of Chinese American Society for Mass Spectrometry (CASMS), ASBMB and US HUPO. She served on ASMS publication committee in 2010-2012. She has been with the US HUPO membership committee since 2009 and currently also serves on US HUPO newsletter committee. She has chaired sessions for several meetings including ASMS conference. She is a co-organizer for the International Conference on Proteomics of Protein Degradation & Ubiquitin Pathways (PPDUP).
If you are an active ASMS member, please act immediately by casting your vote.
