The 61st ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 9 ‒ 13, 2013. With the efforts of CASMS board members, the 2013 Annual Meeting and Dinner event was held on Tuesday evening, June 11, 2013 at the Crowne Plaza in downtown of Minneapolis. Approximately 300 CASMS members, guests from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, and representatives from our sponsors gathered in the luxurious downtown hotel ballroom for this Tuesday annual dinner meeting followed by a professional development forum.  The event was closed with the new CASMS board meeting.

Starting at 6:00 pm, CASMS members and guests gathered at the hotel Skygarden (top left picture) greeting each other and social interactions with the open bar reception service available.  In this year’s meeting, volunteers and other CASMS board members provided the table tickets at the registration desks at the hotel Foyer to guide the attendees’ seating (lower left picture).  The CASMS annual meeting started at 7:30 pm. Professor Andy Tao, a new Executive Committee member, hosted the meeting and made the opening remarks by first thanking the sponsorship for the generous support from vendors and greeting to the attendees.  The CASMS Secretary and Webmaster Professor Zezong Gu made over 100 rolling slides to showcase the CASMS historical events in the past thirty plus years and the recent activities as well as to present vendors’ new development of their products during the meeting. Guest speakers from sponsors congratulated the success that the CASMS is leading the continued development among Chinese mass spectrometry communities. The dinner buffet provided delicious Asian fusion dishes and fruits with Chinese style fortune cookies (lower right picture).
The CASMS President Karen Wang delivered the CASMS annual report for the achievements and milestones of the Society – organizing the Tuesday annual meetings and career workshops in her two-year term, the 4th World Chinese Mass Spectrometry Conference in Taiwan in June 2012, and the approval of the federal tax exempt status for CASMS as a non-profit organization in late May 2013.  She then presented the newly created CASMS Outstanding Member plaques to Professor Yinsheng Wang who was the recipient for the 2013 ASMS prestigious Biemann Medal (top right picture) and Professor Yu Xia who received the 2013 Research Award, and applauded their achievements. Karen also thanked the efforts of the CASMS Executive Committee members Yingying Huang, Kate Yu and Shen Hu for their contributions by presenting the CASMS Service Award to them. With the efforts from the CASMS leadership team and many members, the Society enjoyed more support from the vendors in 2013. The CASMS Treasurer Shouxun Zhao summarized the Society’s solid financial status in this year reaching record high in sponsorship – three Platinum, nine Gold and four Silver levels. For recognizing these achievements under the leadership of the President, Dr. Karen Wang received the Society’s Leadership Award with a plaque presented by Chairman of the CASMS Board of Directors, Dr. Huayi Tong.
Dr. Huayi Tong also announced the assignment of Professor Xianlin Han as the new President for a two-year term and the approval of the nomination of the new Executive Committee members. Dr. Xianlin Han, then, introduced his team of the CASMS Executive Committee members including President-elect Lingjun Li, Immediate-past President Karen Wang, Treasurer Shouxun Zhao, Secretary Zezong Gu, as well as other four new CASMS Executive Committee members chairing individual sub-committees. These include Dr. Lan Huang for Fundraising, Dr. Yinsheng Wang for Membership and Member Professional Development, Dr. Andy Weiguo Tao for Annual Meeting and Program, and Dr. Fanyu Meng for Member Connections. Professors Qian Xiaohong and Yang Pengyuan from Mainland China briefly spoke about the opportunities with over billion Yuan of investment from Chinese government for mass spectrometry-related development. President-elect Lingjun Li and several CASMS members and sponsors announced a number of job openings at various levels worldwide in the mass spectrometry field, the information of which will be posted on CASMS website. After the dinner meeting, about 50 senior scholars and CASMS members had the Professional Development Forum discussing the development and promotion of CASMS hosted by Drs. Lingjun Li and Yinsheng Wang. The new CASMS board members held the first meeting after the Forum to discuss its work plan.
Thanks to many volunteers for the event, this year’s Tuesday Night Annual Meeting and Professional Development Forum were very successful.
